This program, a concentration within the Languages and Literacy Education graduate degree, is one of many highly regarded education programs offered at Millersville which reflect the University's long history of teacher training. MU is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and approved by the American Association of University Women. The Elementary and Early Childhood programs have been accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. 

Admission to this program is open to applicants who possess a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university and a Pennsylvania Instructional I Certification. This program allows for rolling admission and caters to both full- and part-time students. 

Graduates of this program receive a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Language and Literacy Education. 

What Will You Learn?

Both concentrations within the Language and Literacy Education program incorporate professional core studies courses about research methods, student psychology and education philosophies, and specialized required courses.

The English as a Second Language (ESL) concentration encourages graduate students to study and practice second language acquisition, linguistic diversity and language interventions through a clinical practicum. Students concurrently study literature, linguistics and other multicultural aspects. As Millersville University is an approved provider of a Program Specialist-ESL certificate, graduates of this program are eligible to receive ESL add-on certification from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
