Drs. Ximena Catepillan, mathematics, Natalia Dushkina, physics and Nazli Hardy, computer science, presented the talk "Developing an Interdisciplinary Course: Women in Mathematics and Science" at the PASSHE Women's Consortium Annual Conference at West Chester University, November 6. (November 2009)
Dr. Alex DeCaria, earth sciences, is co-author of an article titled "Production of Lightning NOx and its Vertical Distribution Calculated from 3-D Cloud-scale Chemical Transport Model Simulations" that has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Geophysical Research – Atmospheres. Other authors of the article are from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the University of Maryland College Park, the University of Maryland Baltimore County, Rutgers University, the National Center for Atmospheric Research and Science Systems Applications Incorporated. Dr. Sam Earman, earth sciences, presented a paper "Possible impacts of snow-to-rain shifts on groundwater recharge" at the National Ground Water Association's 2009 Thesis Conference in Boulder, Colorado on October 3. (November 2009)
Dr. Ronald Umble, mathematics, served as a visiting research consultant in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Seville, Seville, Spain, during the months of September and October. His work, which focused on problems in digital image processing, applied some new techniques for encoding digital images he helped to develop over the past 10 years. His visit was funded by a grant from the Spanish government. (November 2009)
Dr. Richard Clark, earth sciences, gave an invited presentation at the 25th anniversary event of the Unidata Program Center on October 16th in Boulder, CO. His presentation, "Drinking from the spring: The benefits of data services, tools, and leadership to students" provided an overview of the relationship between Unidata and the tens of thousands of students worldwide who have benefited from free and openaccess to meteorological and climate data through their universities. Clark has served as a member and chair on Unidata governance committees since 1997. (November 2009)
Dr. John R. Wallace, biology, coauthored three book chapters in the recently published book Forensic Entomology: Utility of Arthropods in Legal Investigations. The chapters are "Forensic Meteorology: The application of weather and climate to forensic entomology," "Collection of entomological evidence during death investigations," and "The role of aquatic insects in forensic investigations." In addition, Wallace gave an invited seminar to the biology department at Case Western Reserve University titled, "Buruli Ulcer: An entomological enigma wrapped up in a mycobacterial mystery" and he gave an invited lecture to the Pennsylvania State Coroner's Convention in Bensalem, PA titled, "How crayfish can bite the hand that feeds: A forensic astacological contribution to the Kennedy Brewer Case." And in September, Wallace gave an invited lecture to the Horizons & Heritage Adult seminar group titled "How bugs solve crimes." (November 2009)
