Additional Information
Senior biology major, Gulnar Mangat, choose Millersville University because it felt like home. Having a sister on campus and spending time here in Gansar library as a high school student made her choice to attend Millersville easy. As a child, Gulnar grew-up in India where she was introduced to three disciplines of science- biology, chemistry, and physics. At the age of 12, she was fascinated by the life of science and knew from there that she would pursue a degree in biology. After taking different courses within the Department of Biology, she narrowed her options down to concentrate on molecular biology.
The biology program has offered Gulnar many different experiences within the field. Currently she is working with Dr. Cebra-Thomas on independent research, where they study the evolutionary development of the turtle shell, particularly the plastron (ventral shell). She has also been able to attend two national meetings to present her research findings. In addition, she is involved with Books for International Development, led by Dr. Cosentino, which donates higher level education books, and supplies to developing countries. Outside of the program, Gulnar is involved in the South Asian Student Association of Millersville University, and the pre-health club, the Aesculapian Society.
Gulnar expresses that the biology professors are extremely supportive and always willing to help students in and out of class. They are approachable and accessible, and have become mentors for her. She also accredits the science complex for having excellent equipment and facilities for a great science education and for research.
After graduation, Gulnar will be applying to medical school. She strongly believes that Millersville University and the Biology Department provided her with a strong base to build upon, a lot of scientific knowledge, and important everyday skills (such as time management, problem-solving, scientific reasoning, etc.). Gulnar's advice for prospective students is "Take initiative in their education. Find something you are really passionate about and everyone at Millersville will be willing to help you succeed!"
