Major: Chemistry
Class Year: Senior
Hometown: Lancaster, PA
Additional Information
Rachel chose to attend Millersville because of its strong science programs. "Many people don't realize that Millersville University has been ranked several times in the past five years as one of the best regional universities by US News and World Report," she notes.
Originally a biology major, Rachel decided to switch to chemistry, realizing that she enjoyed the subject and its logic. As a chemistry major, she has had the opportunity to do research with two of her professors, something she has found to be an invaluable experience. Rachel finds that the professors are very friendly and always willing to help and get to know their students. The chemistry department's faculty size affords the benefit of a personal educational environment for each student.
In addition to her academics, Rachel serves as co-vice president of the American Chemical Society Student Affiliate Chapter. She also belongs to the Honors College and is a member of the MU cycling club. In 2007, Rachel was recognized as a Student of Academic Distinction and also received the Polymer Undergraduate Chemistry Award. Rachel has also received the Honors College Achievement Award for Superior GPA, the Honors College Scholarship, the Gerald S. Weiss Chemistry Scholarship, and made the School of Science and Mathematics Dean's List.
After graduating, Rachel plans to continue her studies in organic chemistry, and eventually become a professor. She feels that Millersville has provided her with the means to pursue her goals and established a solid foundation for her future plans. Her advice to prospective students: "Don't be content with taking a backseat. Take an active role in your education, and get to know the professors. They are there to help you and will prove to be an invaluable resource."
