What should you know about the College of Science and Technology?

At Millersville, excellence in teaching and learning is our highest priority. We pride ourselves on the high quality of our teaching in every class offered in the College. Moreover, our professors take a personal interest in the success of our students. While many institutions use graduate students to teach introductory courses and laboratory sections, our professors teach laboratory sections, as well as our introductory courses. Ninety-eight percent of the full-time faculty members in the College hold doctoral degrees. Talk to Millersville students and hear about the high level of interaction that they have with their professors. Each year, majors in our college complete more than one hundred individual research projects, working closely with our faculty. As a result, undergraduates are often listed as co-authors on faculty research publications. Talk with Millersville alumni, and you will hear success stories and compliments on the quality of the undergraduate experience at Millersville. Our alumni will tell you how well prepared they were for the jobs they have taken or how well prepared they were for further study, in top-notch graduate programs or professional schools. At Millersville, the success of our students is of paramount importance.

What is the reputation of the academic departments in the college?

The evidence of quality is everywhere you look:

• Virtually one hundred percent of the Mathematics Education and Science Education majors pass the national Praxis exams on the first try.
• The Department of Computer Science has one of only seven nationally accredited undergraduate computer science programs in Pennsylvania.
• Millersville’s Chemistry, Nursing, and Respiratory Therapy programs also have national accreditation.
• The Nursing Department places 100% of its graduates.
• Our Meteorology program has a national reputation for excellence in teaching and research.
• Marine Biology and Oceanography majors take course work at Millersville and also at the Marine Science Consortium field site at Wallop's Island, VA. Millersville was one of the founding universities of this consortium and has a lead role in its programs.
• The Physics Department graduates among the highest number of physics majors in the Commonwealth and has done so for years.
• Graduating Chemistry majors score on average at the 77th percentile level on the national chemistry Major Field Assessment Test, meaning that our graduates score on average better than eight of every ten students who take the examination nationwide.
• Over the past 10 years, Millersville has produced more graduates in Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics and Physics than any other PA State System of Higher Education university. Millersville is #2 in the State System in the number of Biology graduates and #5 in the number of Computer Science graduates.

Does the college have up-to-date facilities?

Our facilities include the 88,000 square foot state-of-the-art Caputo Hall, which was completed in 1999 and the 55,000 square foot Roddy Hall, which was completely renovated in 2001. In fall of 2006, the university completed a total renovation of Wickersham Hall, which houses the Mathematics Department. Our modern facilities were designed with our students’ needs in mind. Caputo and Roddy Halls have a total of 39 teaching laboratories, but they also house 39 individual laboratories for student/faculty research. Brossman Hall houses oceanography facilities, and Nichols House houses the Earth Sciences Offices and a remote sensing laboratory. In the Spring of 2004, Osburn Hall opened with the excitement of a new facility that was expanded to over 70,000 square foot center for the study of Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology. McComsey Hall is home to the Geography department and houses the Office of the Dean of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, 17 classrooms, 2 computer labs (1 PC lab and 1 dual-booting Mac lab), Myers Auditorium, the Ford Atrium, departmental offices, meeting spaces, and faculty offices. Our faculty members have committed themselves to an undergraduate curriculum that emphasizes the importance of student research as the culmination of the undergraduate experience and our modern facilities were designed to support that objective. Taken together with significant opportunities for internships and co-op experiences in industry, our students have a curriculum that provides them with solid conceptual, theoretical and practical experience.

Why choose the College of Science and Technology for your studies?

Millersville faculty will take a personal interest in your education. Our faculty members are experienced educators, but they are also active scholars, who recognize that their research activities complement and inform their teaching. Most faculty research is performed in collaboration with our undergraduates and many faculty papers have Millersville students as co-authors.

The departments in the College have a long tradition of successfully preparing students for professional positions in industry, for graduate and professional schools and for positions as secondary mathematics and science teachers (a high priority in the Commonwealth). We offer high quality, laboratory-rich experiences and all of our labs are directed by faculty members and not graduate students. All majors are assigned a faculty adviser in their major department to support them as they plan their programs of study and consider career choices. Talk to a Millersville graduate, and you will invariably hear of a faculty mentor who took a personal interest in that alumnus and helped to guide the development of his or her career.
