Outcomes assessment answers the question "Did we, in fact, accomplish what we intended to for our students, University and local community?" It is the process of specifying outcomes, establishing measurable criteria and comparing actual results to those criteria. Changes that come about as a result of these analyses are documented and outcomes are measured again in a following cycle to verify improvement.
- Millersville's assessment of student learning process for each degree program includes :
- Six to eight (or reasonable, manageable number of) student learning outcomes
- Alignment of outcomes to University and department missions
- Maps to where learning experiences may occur
- At least two measures to assess student learning per outcome (one being direct evidence of student learning)
- Achievement targets for each measure (appropriate level criteria expected to demonstrate at the time students complete the program)
- Annual analysis of assessment results for specified learning outcomes
- Sharing of results with key stakeholders
- Actions taken to improve student learning where needed (closing the loop)
The assessment cycle at Millersville begins with planning and ends with acting on what was learned. Student learning outcomes, measures, and achievement targets are planned during a five year cycle aligned with the program review process. Annual reports are provided each fall for the prior academic year that indicate student achievement of learning outcomes and how results were used to make improvements. Assessment Plans are reviewed and updated during the program review process.
- Millersville University faculty and staff are committed to using outcomes assessment as a tool to fine-tune instructional delivery and service performance.
- Millersville University is charged by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, as well as multiple and other, program specific accrediting agencies, to demonstrate that the institution is and accomplishing what has been set out in the mission. The Middle States Commission requires colleges and universities to:
- Engage in program outcomes assessment
- Engage in general education assessment
- Demonstrate the 120 credits that make up a degree are coherent
- To use assessment information to improve teaching and learning
