Barracuda Anti-spam System:
The University employs an anti-spam system known as Barracuda.
Each day that incoming spam was quarantined for your email address, you will receive a report listing the items, and providing you with the option of releasing that item back into your INBOX, or even marking that address as something you always want delivered.
There will also be a link which will allow you to log on directly to your Barracuda account, using your Outlook or myVille userid & password. There you will again see the list of quarantined items, and make adjustments in your settings. For instance, you will be able to change the frequency of the email reports you receive, or add email addresses from which you never want items delivered.

Warning on Data Mining Spams – called “phishing”
Never respond to an e-mail asking for personal data, such as account numbers, passwords, etc. Reputable banks and other institutions will not ask you to verify details in an e-mail; this kind of spam is called “phishing”, because the perpetrators are fishing for any data they can use illicitly.
Please be assured that Millersville personnel will absolutely never ask your for a password in an e-mail. If you have any doubt about the authenticity of a request for personal data, please err on the side of caution. Feel free to give the Help Desk a call (717 871 2371), and we can help you identify real e-mail from phony scams.

Outlook Specific Information:
Email spam can be handled in a couple ways with Outlook and MU Email Administrator help at MU. Outlook XP/2002 and 2003 have a Junk Email filter that can be used.
- In Outlook look under the Actions menu, select the Junk Email selection.
- There are some options and you can add email to the Outlook Junk Email filter that you wish to block.
- If you still get some stubborn spam, there is a Spam Dropbox folder under the Public Folders.
- Click on the plus sign in front of Public Folders to expand it, then click on the plus sign in front of All Public Folders to expand it.
- You will see various folders and one of them is the Spam Dropbox.
- Drag annoying spam messages in here and the MU email administrators will do their best to block this spam from your email Inbox.
TIPS:
- Please do not respond to unknown email or attempt to unsubscribe from it. Responding to spam often results in an increase of spam.
- Never give out your personal information in response to email such as social security number, credits card numbers, addresses, etc. E-mails requesting this information are usually "phishing" messages trying to get personal information for illegal purposes.
For detailed instructions on how to use your junk mail features, please contact the Help Desk at x2371.
