MU provides Symantec Norton AntiVirus (NAV) Corporate edition software to protect and clean a PC of viruses.

• NAV on a client PC is typically set up to perform a daily update of the latest virus definitions.
• A daily scan of the hard drive is also a common set up in order to keep the PC clean of viruses.

The university also scans all incoming email to campus Outlook email accounts.

Symantec NAV is not the only antivirus software product, but it is the one chosen by MU to combat viruses. Other antivirus products include:

• McAfee
• Sophos
• avast!
• F-Prot

Note: No one antivirus product can protect a PC from all viruses. However, you can only install one antivirus on a PC at a time.

WARNING: Multiple installs of antivirus products have been known to cause major problems with the functioning of the PC.

The Windows operating system critical updates must also be performed. Windows XP and 2000 can have this setup automatically to get recent downloads from Microsoft. These provide protection from viruses that are Internet driven and can be installed on the PC without the customer opening any infected email attachments or visiting infected websites. This class of virus includes Trojans and worms.

The PC only needs to:

• have access to the Internet and
• be powered on.
