Campus Climate Results
Creating and maintaining a community environment that respects individual needs, abilities, human potential, and diversity is a Millersville University core goal. As a civically responsible institution of higher education, we support objectives that advance this important societal goal, and our commitment is embedded in the intent and language of the University's mission statement and revised vision statement and guiding strategic directions.
It is very important that we ensure a positive climate exists to encourage attention to fairness and discourage expressions of discrimination and harassment. In 2001, Millersville University conducted a climate assessment, a major step toward creating an environment in which diversity initiatives were taken seriously, given support, and considered important institutional priorities. The 2001 climate survey and assessment laid the foundation for the study and discovery of information that enabled faculty and staff to build stronger diversity initiatives - enabling the exploration of implications beyond mere numbers.
The study results also helped us in establishing specific goals and led to the development of the Millersville University Strategic Plan for Equity, Diversity & Community 2003-2008. Many strategic actions were implemented as a result of the plan including the development of the inclusion statement, the development and implementation of a comprehensive mediation program, the creation of the Collegiate Leadership Development Program (CLDP), the initiation of the Social Equity Cultural Education Series programs, the implementation of the general education diversity requirement, and a faculty/staff diversity education program later expanded to include a student diversity component within new student orientation.
Over the last year, the Office of Social Equity & Diversity has been working with the Social Equity Strategic Planning Advisory Committee (SESPAC) to plan the development of Millersville's next phase of the five-year Strategic Plan for Equity, Diversity and Community. To this end, last semester we conducted another campus climate assessment and the results are in. Click on the Executive Summary below to see a snapshot of the results. The complete report of findings can be viewed by contacting the Office of Social Equity & Diversity in the Delaware House (872-3787).
