Dr. Leonora Foels is an Associate Professor at Millersville University (MU) in the social work department where she has taught since 2009. Dr. Foels is also the co-chair of the Social Work Department’s Learning Institute: Global Well Being and Social Justice at Millersville University. Dr. Foels teaches a variety of practice and elective courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Previously, she was Visiting Faculty and Lecturer at the University of Tennessee College of Social Work, Nashville Campus and an Adjunct Professor at Barry University School of Social Work. Dr. Foels received her PhD from Barry University School of Social Work in 2007 and MSW from Simmons College School of Social Work in 2003.

Dr. Foels is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW in Florida and Pennsylvania) and licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW in Massachusetts) with a Professional Educator’s Certificate: School Social Worker/Grades: PreK-12 and Exceptional Student Education/Grades: K-12 in Florida. In addition, she is recognized as a qualified supervisor in Florida for clinical social worker (CSW) and mental health counselor (MHC). Dr. Foels has over 17 years of clinical social work practice experience with diverse populations in the community and child services. She provided a multitude of social work services as a practitioner to at-risk children, adolescents, and their families in a range of practice settings. In the Miami Dade County Public School System, she implemented and coordinated programs for students with special needs and at-risk as well as served as a liaison between the school and the child welfare agencies.

Research Interests:

The focal point of Dr. Foels research agenda revolves around social work practice, diversity, social justice and change, social work education issues, and using technology in education. During her 5 years at Millersville University, she frequently explores other avenues for publications in these areas and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborative community engaged research and service learning projects domestically and internationally. Dr. Foels has published an article in Social Work Education and most recently was invited to publish a book chapter. She is also a co-principal investigator on several research projects. Additionally, Dr. Foels consistently presents at International and National Conferences and Symposia as well as Local, Regional, and State Conference and Symposia.

Professional Involvement:

Dr. Foels is a member of the following professional organizations: Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors (BPD), Council of Social Work Education (CSWE), National Association of Social Workers (NASW - Pennsylvania Chapter), Rural Social Work Caucus, and Pennsylvania Association of School Social Work Personnel (PASSWP).
