The Donor Investor Imperative: Engaging with Advancement for Transformational Ideas and Impact

Audience: Provosts, deans, academic leaders; student affairs and community engagement leaders; their frontline fundraising staff that represent their units; advancement communications/marketing and stewardship/donor relations staff

Recent years have brought the rise of “donor investors” in higher education fundraising. This session will explore how to successfully cultivate and close gifts from this new breed of philanthropists. Ultra-high-net-worth donors today thrive on engaging directly with academic leaders on the development of substantive and impact-focused projects. EAB will discuss how institutions are developing transformative gift opportunities to appeal to these donor investors and how deans and university leaders can collaborate with advancement staff to engage, cultivate, and steward donors.

In particular, the session will detail how faculty and staff can collaborate to reframe traditional academic projects in compelling terms, communicate the impact of gifts on the institution and society to donors, and develop compelling narratives to present these ideas. It will also outline how staff can collaborate effectively with academic leaders and faculty to involve them in cultivation and in stewardship.

Attendees will engage in activities and discussions to define and refine “big idea” giving opportunities and to explain their impact across multiple lenses. Attendees will also design a “volunteer strikeforce,” an EAB model of gathering potential donors together around an impact-focused project.

Just opened, it is the University’s Net Zero building enhancing sustainability initiatives on our campus and houses the Admissions and Marketing departments for Millersville University. Student Ambassadors will assist in directing you.
