Examine your relationship (is your relationship unhealthy?)

Signs of an unhealthy relationship include:

  • Focusing all your attention and energy on your significant other
  • Stop contacting friends and family or stop partcipating in activities you enjoy
  • Feeling pressured or controlled
  • Having more bad times than good one
  • Feeling sad when with your partner  

Signs of a healthy relationship include:

  • Having more good times than bad
  • Having a life outside the relationship, with your own friends and activities
  • Making decisions together
  • Dealing with conflicts by talking
  • Feeling comfortable
  • Feeling able to take care of yourself
  • Feeling like your partner supports you and your decisions.

Communication

  • Find the right time to talk about issues
  • Talk face to face (avoid email, texting, or phone conversations)
  • Do not attack or judge
  • Be honest and truthful about issues pertaining to the relationship
  • Check body language (if you see your partner grow angry or uncomfortable try a different approach)
  • 48 hour rule (wait and if you’re still upset then bring it up)
  • If you’re angry:
    • Stop
    • Think
    • Talk
    • Listen
