Teibele and Her Demon
THE STORY
A fable by Isaac Bashevis Singer and Eve Friedman
“Rare theatrical magic … moving and full of wonder” N.Y. Daily News
In a Polish Jewish village in the late 19th century lives Teibele, a young attractive woman whose husband has deserted her and apparently disappeared. Teibele can’t remarry until he’s legally declared dead. Alchonon, a woe-begone, unemployed scholar, loves Teibele from afar, but she despises him. But Alchonon knows of Teibele’s fascination for biblical demons and their powers, and devises an outrageous plan to woo and win her in the dark. His plan succeeds … disguised as a the demon, he captures the heart of his Teibele, but can he ever win her love in the real world?
Playwrights Singer and Friedman create a dark world of mystery and superstition in this story of love, passion and deception.
