Tobacco Program

About the Program

Millersville University's Tobacco Program, in coordination with the Students Working Against Tobacco Program, provides prevention education programming to prevent the initiation of tobacco use on campus; provides free cessation services to students, faculty, and staff; and assists with policy development to provide a healthy campus environment.

This project is funded in part by the Health Promotion Council and the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Edward G. Rendell, Governor.

Smoking Cessation Services

Smoking cessation services at Millersville University are based off of the American Cancer Society's Fresh Start Program.

Both individual and group cessation programs are offered free of charge to students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Participation in the program includes six free weeks of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (gum, patch, or lozenge) which is distributed by Health Services.

Individual Cessation:

  • Offered year-round by appointment
  • 3 classes over a 4 week period (Session I, Session II, week off, Session III)

Group Cessation:

  • Programs separate for students and faculty/staff/administrators
  • Programs are offered typically one time per semester
  • 4 classes over a 5 week period (Session I, Session II, Session III, week off, Session IV)

Classes focus on:

  • Nicotine addiction/triggers
  • Methods/strategies for quitting
  • Nicotine Replacement Therapy products
  • Coping mechanisms for managing common withdrawal symptoms
  • Appropriate strategies for handling cravings
  • Strategies for remaining tobacco free

Classes are aimed at providing a supportive, friendly, and educational environment to assist you in the quitting process and should not be confused with classes that require you to quit in order to participate.
