FAQ
Helping answer your questions is a big part of what we do in Academic Advisement; the following list includes some of the most common questions that we are asked. To use this page, simply click on the question to get to the answer. If you can't find the answer to your question, please submit your question and we will add it to the list.
How many Perspectives courses do I need to take?
Are sociology and anthropology one department?
How do I change my major/minor?
Can I have a minor in my major department?
Can I minor in anything I want?
Do I have to double-up in G2 with two science courses?
Can I use a course taught by my major department in the Perspectives block?
How many Perspectives courses do I need to take?
You only need to take one approved perspectives course. However, you must take another general education ("gen ed") class that you did not use for meeting Liberal Arts Core requirements to fill the perspectives block.
Are sociology and anthropology one department?
Yes and no. They are one department, but, when filling general education requirements, they do not count as one department. For example, you cannot take a sociology course and an anthropology course and have them count as two courses from one department in the G3 block.
How do I change my major/minor?
Printing a Change of Major or Change of Minor Form from the Student Forms Center.
-or-
You can change your major by coming to Academic Advisement (Lyle Hall 2nd Floor) and picking up an Academic Major/Academic Minor Form. You will need your current adviser's signature and the chairperson of the new major department's signature. The chairperson will assign you a new adviser.
The form is processed in the office of Academic Advisement.

Can I have a minor in my major department?
You can have a minor in your major department if only one course required for the minor is also required and counted in the major.
Can I minor in anything I want?
Yes and No. University policy prohibits a student from being awarded a minor where more than one course that is required in the minor is also required and used in the major. That still leaves a lot of minors to choose from. If you have any questions about whether or not it's ok to minor in a particular area, given your major, just ask us.
MATH 090 (like COMM 010, CHEM 110, ELED 090, and ENGL 010) carries credit, but the credits for these five courses do not count toward the 120 credits needed for graduation. So, if you took one of these courses, remember that you need to earn 120 credits in addition to meeting graduation requirements.
Do I have to double-up in G2 with two science courses?
No. As with the other two groups in the Liberal Arts Core, you must have at least four courses totaling 12 credits. The doubling-up can occur with any of the departments listed in that block. Therefore, you might fill block G2 with, for example, two math courses, an earth sciences course, and a physics course (note that earth science and physics are 2 science courses that are not from same department). If you decide to fill this block with a math and a computer science course, that's when you need to have 2 science courses (from Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, or Physics) from the same department. Do keep in mind that one of the courses in this block must be a lab science course.
Can I use a course taught by my major department in the Perspectives block?
It's possible. If you already have one approved Perspectives course in that block, you may use a course taught by your major department as the second course in the block if that course is approved for the Liberal Arts Core and the course is over and above courses needed for major requirement. This situation requires a special coding of your degree audit, so contact us at Academic Advisement to discuss what you want to do.
The easiest way is to follow the instructions of the GPA Calculator.
