The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and Millersville University: South Central PaARTners are excited to bring back Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest for the 2009-2010 school year.
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with Arts Agencies in each state to support the expansion of Poetry Out Loud, which encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. This exciting program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.
What does it take to become involved in Poetry Out Loud?
An individual teacher, a group of teachers, the drama department or club, or an entire school decides to offer this opportunity to students. Community groups such as scouts, local arts councils, home school groups, etc may also participate.
Teachers are provided with free multimedia curriculum materials – a poetry anthology, audio guide, teachers’ guide, posters, and comprehensive website, http://www.poetryoutloud.org, all according to national educational standards – to augment their regular curriculum with poetry recitation and a school-wide competition.
Each participating school or community group is given the opportunity to send ONE student to the regional competition. It's up to the teachers or organizer to decide how that student is selected.
This year's regional competition will be held Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Millersville University's Myers Auditorium. The winner of the regional contest will then compete in the state final to be held March 15, 2010 at the Governor's Residency in Harrisburg.
Schools interested in participating should submit a participation form to us by January 8, 2010.
