MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO HOLY FAMILY, 3-2
October 24, 2007 Philadelphia, Pa. – Forward Jason Lopez broke a 2-2 tie late in the second half on a header off of a free kick as the Holy Family men’s soccer team went on to defeat Millersville in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.
Lopez received a pass from teammate Ed Szambelak, who was taking an awarded free kick, and headed it past Millersville goalkeeper Lucas Stacey (fr. Lititz/Warwick) into the upper left corner at the 72:20 mark. Stacey had replaced starting goalkeeper Matt Langione (fr. York/Dallastown) at halftime who had not played in the previous two matches after suffering an injury.
Holy Family tied the game at 2-2 midway through the first half when forward Sean Hordijenko scored his second goal on a rebound off of Langione. Hordijenko scored his first goal of the game at the 12:36 mark that tied the game at 1-1.
Millersville midfielder Tim Hollenback (sr. Aston/Sun Valley) started the scoring for the Marauders 6:39 into the match when forward Sean McLaughlin (jr. Holland/Council Rock South) found him on a cross from the right side that he redirected in for an early 1-0 Millersville lead.
After Hordijenko tied the game at 1-1, McLaughlin converted on a Holy Family turnover to put the visitors ahead 2-1 at the 21:53 mark. The goal was McLaughlin’s team-leading ninth of the season.
The match was very physical between the two schools as both teams racked up 20 or more fouls.
Despite being outshot by Millersville, 20-13, Holy Family was able to control the game by holding an advantage in corner kicks 9-6.
With the win Holy Family improves to 12-7-1 on the season. The loss drops Millersville to 10-7-1 overall.
Millersville will look to lock up and improve on their playoff positioning this Saturday, October 27, when they host Slippery Rock beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Beimesderfer Stadium. The Rock defeated Millersville in their first meeting this season, 1-0.
