LATE TOUCHDOWN COSTS MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY 'S FOOTBALL TEAM IN 17-10 LOSS TO BENTLEY COLLEGE
November 3, 2007 – Henry Morris' 15-yard touchdown strike to Jehan Murphy with 30 seconds to play was the difference in Bentley College 's 17-10 win in a non-conference game at Millersville University on Saturday afternoon.
Morris, who started in place of the injured John White, Bentley's usual starting QB, found Murphy on a quick slant to cap a nine-play, 88-yard drive that started with 2:38 remaining. Morris completed 18 of 44 passes for 245 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
Murphy was flagged for an excessive celebration penalty as he leapt into the end zone, forcing the Falcons to kickoff from their own 15.
Bill Shirk (fr. Phoenixville/Phoenixville), who played the final two possessions at quarterback for Millersville, nearly led the Marauder's on a game-tying drive after starting at his own 30. After completions of 14 yards to Randall Eggleton (sr. Philadelphia/John Bartram), five yards to Brad Lantz (so. Towanda/Towanda) and 18 yards to Andrew Tischbein (jr. Duncannon/Hershey), Shirk's pressured toss to the end zone fell short, setting up the final play with one second remaining.
But Shirk's throw to a well-covered Jimmie Cotton (fr. Sharon Hill/Malvern Prep) was tipped away to end the game.
Eggleton finished with five catches for 82 yards.
Bentley took a 7-0 lead with nine minutes to play in the first quarter when Morris hit John Studley on an 80-yard catch-and-run.
Starting quarterback Jamal Smith (fr. Camp Hill/Trinity) scored Millersville's lone touchdown on a one-yard sneak on third down with 6:59 remaining before halftime. That tied the score at 7-7.
The TD was set up by Smith's 19-yard scramble to the Bentley 26 and, on the next play, Smith's 24-yard pass to Eggleton. For the game, Smith completed seven of 13 passes for 118 yards and an interception. He finished with 37 yards rushing.
Millersville's Brandon Shelton (sr. New Oxford/Gettysburg Area) made his sixth interception of the season and returned it 41 yards to the Bentley 17 with 48 seconds remaining in the second half. Shelton also finished with four tackles and two passes defensed.
Bentley's Paul Tetzel returned the favor on the very next play by picking off Smith in the end zone.
A 50-yard return of the second half kickoff by Jimmie Cotton set up the Marauder's go-ahead field goal, a 34-yard boot by John Banzhof (so. Lancaster/McCaskey), to make the score 10-7.
Tetzel returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yards to set up Tyler McNamara's game-tying 26-yard field goal with 7:30 to play in the third quarter.
Bentley's final score was set up by Morris' 33-yard pass to Kyle Tuthill on third-and-28.
The game wasn't quite a defensive struggle – the teams combined for 634 yards of total offense – but each team punted 10 times.
Millersville's Lantz led all rushers with 70 yards and caught four passes for 40 yards. Bentley's Luis Cotto finished with 64 yards rushing.
Millersville (3-7, 2-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) will host division rival Kutztown next Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Marauder's season finale. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. Fans are welcomed to show up early for the pre-game Senior Day festivities.
Bentley is now 7-2 overall and 6-2 in the Northeast 10 Conference.
