MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY SWIMMING TEAM PLACE SECOND AT GOLDEN BEAR INVITE

November 17, 2007 – The Millersville University women’s swimming team took home a second-place finish at the Golden Bear Invite Saturday afternoon at Kutztown University.  The Marauders were led by backstroke specialist Sarah Johnson (sr. Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg), who placed first in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke.

Johnson edged out Kutztown’s Stephanie Jeppesen in the 200-yard backstroke on Friday evening, finishing with a time of 2:16.68, 1.21 seconds faster than Jeppesen (2:17.89).  MU teammate Stephanie Mouthann (fr. North Wales/North Penn) finished fourth in the event with a time of 2:22.07.

Later in the evening, butterfly specialist Becca Laufer (so. Mountville/Hempfield) narrowly missed a second Marauder victory, finishing second in the 200-yard butterfly.  She finished the race with a time of 2:20.73.

Courtney Wallace (fr. West Chester/West Chester East) earned a fifth-place finish in the race with a time of 2:25.94.
In the final event for the women Friday evening, Millersville’s 400-yard medley relay team of Katie McDade (jr. Philadelphia/Archbiship Ryan), Amanda Wetzler (so. Hummelstown/Elizabethtown), Laufer and Johnson, finished second to Kutztown with a time of 4:21.00.  The same relay team finished second on Saturday in the 200-yard medley relay.

Laufer and Weztler also took home third- and fourth-place finishes, respectively, in the 100-yard butterfly.  The tandem finished just a tenth of a second apart with times of 1:04.30 and 1:04.40.

Johnson scored her second victory of the meet in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:03.26.  Wetzler grabbed another second-place finish in the same race with a time of 1:04.30.

Millersville finished second out of a nine-team field and trailed only Kutztown after the final event.

The Marauders currently stand with a 1-1 record in dual meets and will hit the pool again Saturday, December 1, when they travel to Annville, Pa. for a meet with Lebanon Valley College.
