BATES PACES MILLERSVILE IN COMFORTABLE WIN AT BLOOMSBURG

Jan. 16 – A steal and layup by Charlie Parker (sr. Fawn Grove , Pa. /Kennard-Dale HS) 19 seconds into the contest gave Millersville the lead for good in a 79-68 win at Bloomsburg on Wednesday night in PSAC East Division opening-night action.

Reggie Bates (jr. Chicago , Ill. /Hubbard HS) scored 27 points and the Marauders (11-4, 1-0), who led by at least seven points in the final 18:42, have now won four consecutive games.

Bernard Brown (jr. Harrisburg , Pa. /Harrisburg HS) finished with 18 points (8-for-13) and a team-high 12 rebounds. Parker stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals.

Nick Jones led the Huskies (8-7, 0-1) with 18 points.

Millersville took control with solid defense (10 steals to Bloomsburg's four) and an explosive transition game. The Marauders outscored the Huskies 12-0 in fastbreak points and also controlled the inside with a 50-36 points in the paint advantage.

After Parker scored to open the game, Bates scored six consecutive MU points to push the Marauders in front 8-2. Bates, who shot 13-of-20 from the floor, then stole the ball and was fouled while making a layup on the break. He sank the ensuing foul shot to put MU up 15-8 with 14:44 left in the first half.

A three-pointer from Zac Bauermaster (so. Quarryville , Pa. /Solanco HS) gave MU its largest lead of the first half at 31-19 with 5:53 on the clock. Five consecutive Bloomsburg points pulled the Huskies to within four just before halftime, but Bates snuck in a layup, off a feed from Cory Bray (fr. Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion HS), with five seconds left to stop their momentum.

Millersville opened the half with a 14-4 run that was capped when Bray, the reigning PSAC East Rookie of the Week, buried a trey to put the Marauders up 53-37. The Huskies would come as close as seven points with 3:01 to play, but Bates added two late layups and the Marauders did well enough from the foul line (4-for-9) to win comfortably.

Millersville will host Mansfield on Saturday at 3 p.m.
