MARAUDERS WIN WILD OVERTIME MATCH-UP AT MANSFIELD
Feb. 9 – The Millersville University men's basketball team won yet another overtime game to bump its winning streak to three after a 95-92 win at Mansfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Marauders (16-6, 5-2 PSAC East), who are now 4-1 in overtime games this season, led the entire second half until Mansfield's Chris Greene nailed a 3-pointer from three steps inside the half court line to tie the score at 74-74 with one second left.
Millersville's lead reached seven points with 1:31 to play in overtime but the Marauders needed two Brannon Burnett (Inglewood, Ca./Inglewood HS) free throws with six seconds remaining, and Greene's miss of a potential game-tying trey, to win. Burnett scored 10 of his 12 points in OT.
Charlie Parker (sr. Fawn Grove, Pa./Kennard-Dale HS) scored a team-high 25 points and moved into fifth place on the MU all-time scoring list, surpassing 1957 grad John Parker's total of 1,748. Parker, who now has 1,765 career points, needs 40 points to surpass 1987 graduate John Fox for the No. 4 spot.
Parker went nine-of-10 from the free throw line and drained two clutch foul shots to extend MU's lead to three with three seconds left in regulation. Those free throws proved to be valuable after Greene's buzzer-beating three-pointer.
Millersville had five players score double-digit points. Reggie Bates (jr. Chicago, Ill./Hubbard HS) scored 22 points while Bernard Brown (jr. Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) and RayQuan Miles (Hampton, Va./Phoebus HS) each scored 11. Miles also had a game-high 11 rebounds.
Greene scored a game-high 30 points for the Moutaineers (15-7, 3-4 PSAC East).
Neither team led by more than six points (Millersville, 33-27 at the 4:09 mark) in a first half that featured six ties. Parker's layup 47 seconds before the break made the score 40-40 and it remained that way until halftime.
Brown's layup started MU's 9-0 run to open the second half and gave the Marauders a lead they wouldn't relinquish until the final play in regulation. The Marauders' advantage reached as many as 11 points after a pair of Burnett free throws with 7:48 to play.
That's when the Moutaineers busted out an 11-2 run to cut their deficit to two points with 4:31 remaining.
Parker's triple put Millersville up by four with 1:20 remaining, but two treys by Greene cancelled out three MU free throws to force OT.
Burnett's three-pointer with 3:36 left in OT gave the Marauders the lead for good.
Millersville returns to action Wed., Feb. 13 against Bloomsburg for Think Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Night. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
