LADY MARAUDERS SURVIVE EAST STROUDSBURG'S LATE RUN, TALLY 11TH STRAIGHT WIN
Feb. 23 – The Millersville University women's basketball team held off a strong surge at East Stroudsburg to pull out a 65-61 victory and an 11th consecutive win.
The Lady Marauders (21-4, 10-0 PSAC East), who fell behind 11-4 to start the game, took the lead for good midway through the first half and led by as many as 16 in the second half.
The Warriors (10-14, 4-6 PSAC East) began a 15-2 run with 7:03 to play and had the ball down two with under a minute remaining. Aiesha Bellamy (so. Harrisburg, Pa./Duquesne Univ.) pressured ESU's Monika Fogelsanger into a missed layup with 39 seconds left.
Bellamy grabbed the rebound and Jenna Craig (so. Lewistown, Pa./Lewistown Area HS) hit an 18-footer with 12 seconds left to seal the win.
Gladine St. Julien (jr. Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley HS) tallied a game-high 22 points for the Marauders, who also got 12 points from Kari Cover (sr. East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs HS) and a game-high 12 rebounds from Craig.
MU, which trailed early, went on a 10-0 run midway through the first half to take control. Jenna Philo (jr. Lancaster, Pa./JP McCaskey HS) started the streak with a trey at the 10:29 mark before Craig's free throw gave MU the lead for good (15-14) with 9:29 on the clock before the half.
Cover and Ashley Moyer (so. Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest HS) added consecutive three-pointers to complete the run.
Cover's jumper with 2:48 left in the half gave MU its first double-digit lead (34-23).
Millersville led by seven at halftime and built the lead to 16 with 14:36 to play after Moyer hit two free throws.
St. Julien's layup with 7:23 to play gave MU a 15-point advantage before ESU started its 15-2 run.
Millersville, which earlier this week moved up three spots to No. 7 in the NCAA East Regional Poll, will next host Cheyney on Wed., Feb. 27 at Pucillo Gymnasium. MU beat Cheyney 65-60 on the road on Jan. 30 in its closest conference game other than Saturday's win over ESU.
The game against Cheyney, which begins at 6 p.m., will be the Lady Marauders' regular season home finale and the final of three “blackouts” in which fans are encouraged to wear black clothing. It will also be senior night.
