WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM COMPLETES PERFECT REGULAR SEASON WITH 69-49 VICTORY OVER WEST CHESTER

Mar. 1 – The Millersville University women’s basketball team completed a perfect regular season (12-0) and grabbed their 13th consecutive victory with a 69-49 win over host West Chester at Hollinger Field House Saturday afternoon.

The win marked the first time since the East-West division format began in 1981-82 that a Millersville women’s basketball team went undefeated in regular season play.  It was just the fourth time the feat has been accomplished in the conference.

This season marked the fifth time head coach Mary Fleig led a Marauder team to the Eastern Division title and the 13th consecutive win marks the third-longest winning streak during her tenure.  The 1999-00 team won 14 straight while the 2004-05 squad won 15 in a row.

The Lady Marauders (23-4, 12-0), ranked 6th in the Eastern Region, were led by forward Raquel Green (so. Philadelphia/Coppin St.) who made just her second start of the season and scored a season high 26 points and pulled down nine rebounds.  The 26 points were the most by any Marauder this season.  Green shot 10-of-16 from the floor and dropped 15 of her points in the second half.

The game began with several lead changes and remained tight through most of the first half before Millersville was able to go on an 8-2 run over the final 5:26 and grab a 33-27 lead at halftime.  Green scored four points during the run including a layup off a feed from guard Jenna Philo (jr. Lancaster/J.P. McCaskey) who finished with a game-high five assists.

Millersville began the second half much like the first, using a 13-3 run to push their lead to 16 with 14:08 remaining in the game.  Forward Gladine St. Julien (Leesport/Schuykill Valley), who finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, scored six of the Marauders points during the run as she converted on all three of her layup attempts.  Millersville shot 12-20 from the floor in the second half and led by as many as 22 late in the contest.

Both teams had difficulty taking care of the basketball as they recorded 30 turnovers apiece.  Millersville took advantage of the turnovers holding an edge in points off of turnovers, 34-16.

Millersville will host East Stroudsburg on Tuesday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in the first round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs.    Millersville defeated East Stroudsburg in both meetings this season, claiming a 72-64 win at Pucillo before going on the road to knock of the Warriors, 65-61.
