MILLERSVILLE FALLS TO CALIFORNIA (PA) IN CONFERENCE SEMIFINALS, 63-53

March 7 – The Millersville University women’s basketball team fell to nationally-ranked California (Pa.) in the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament, 63-53, to end the Marauder’s run at a conference title.

MU, ranked seventh in the latest East Region rankings, will await their fate until the selection show for the Division II Women’s Basketball National Tournament to be broadcast this Sunday evening.  The top eight teams from each region are selected to participate in the single-elimination tournament.

Millersville led at the half 29-27 behind a series of runs that brought them back into the game.

After the Vulcans took a quick 10-3 lead, MU responded with a 10-2 run that gave them their first lead of the game (13-12) at the 9:10 mark.  Guard Ashley Moyer (so. Lebanon/Cedar Crest) delivered on back-to-back jumpers to kick start the run.  She was one of three Marauders in double-figures as she finished with 11 points.

California quickly answered with a 9-0 run of their own highlighted by Shaquetta Mance’s pair of jumpers.  Mance finished with a game-high 22 points.

Millersville picked up the pace offensively once again, grabbing the lead back from the Vulcans just before the half on a jumper by forward Raquel Green (so. Philadelphia/Coppin St.).

The two teams traded baskets throughout much of the second half.  California eventually grabbed its first lead of the second half at the 8:22 mark on a three-point hit by Lindsay Johnson that put the Vulcans up 46-45.  The lead would never be relinquished as the Vulcans extended the lead to eleven with a 14-6 run over the next seven minutes.

Three players finished in double-figures for the Vulcans as Guard’s Brooque Willams and Lindsay Johnson complimented Mance with 16 and 12 points, respectively.

The Marauders were led by forward Gladine St Julien (jr. Leesport/Schuylkill Valley) who dropped in 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds in 32 minutes of action.

The Vulcans outrebounded the Marauders, 49-42, and held a 21-17 edge on the offensive glass.

The loss ended the Marauders winning-streak at 14 games, which tied them for the third-longest in school history.

The Vulcans, ranked 22nd in the latest Division II Women’s Basketball Poll, will take on the winner of Indiana (Pa.) and West Chester in the PSAC Championship game tomorrow evening.
