RED RAIDERS HOLD MARAUDER OFFENSE IN CHECK IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

March 29 – The Millersville University softball team managed just seven hits over two games against a tough Shippensburg pitching staff as the Red Raiders recorded 2-1 and 4-2 victories Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader.

Millersville (12-13, 0-4) fell behind early in game one when starting pitcher Courtney Eckman (fr. Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strausburg) gave up back-to-back hits that resulted in two Red Raider runs.

The Marauders cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth when Casey Coker’s (fr. Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) single to left center scored Lindsay Hosier (so. Glen Mills, Pa./Penncrest).

Shippensburg starter Dani Shields settled down and gave up just one hit over the final three innings as she struck eight on her way to the win.

Game two Red Raider starter Lori Knopf nearly matched the effort of her game one counterpart as she went the distance giving up just four hits while striking out seven.

After a scoreless tie was broken in the fourth with back-to-back Red Raider hits, shortstop Hope Cornell slapped a three-run homerun in the fifth inning to give the home team a 4-0 lead.

Millersville responded in the sixth pushing two runs across on two hits and with the help of two Shippensburg errors.

Millersville was led at the plate by Maria Polyak (so. Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) who finished the day 2-for-5 and was the only Marauder to record more than one hit.

Janelle Mrakovich (jr. Middletown, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) took the game two loss as she struck out five in six innings of work.

The team, after playing 10 games in the past six days, will travel to Wilmington, Delaware on Monday for a doubleheader with Goldey-Beacom College beginning at 3:30 p.m.
