MILLERSVILLE SOFTBALL TEAM DROPS PAIR OF CLOSE GAMES TO SHIPPENSBURG

April 16 – The Millersville University softball team lost twice by one run to visiting Shippensburg, which swept the four-game season series from the Marauders on Wednesday.

Millersville (17-20, 5-11 PSAC East) out-hit Shippensburg 7-5 in Game 1 but left nine runners stranded and lost 2-1.

In Game 2, the Marauders scored an unearned run with two outs in the seventh but could not plate the tying run in another 2-1 defeat.

The Red Raiders (26-18, 9-7 PSAC East) swept the tight four-game season series, winning three of the games by one run and the other by two. Ship's other two wins came at home on March 29.

MU's Janelle Mrakovich (jr. Middletown , Pa. /Bishop McDevitt HS), the reigning PSAC East Pitcher of the Week, yielded just one earned run in seven innings pitched in game one. She has allowed just two earned runs in her last 27 innings but has also suffered two one-run losses during that span.

Centerfielder Alexa Ashwell (sr. Westminster , Md. /Westminster HS) and designated player Amy Kossyk (Kunkletown, Pa./Pleasant Valley HS) each tallied two hits for MU in Game 1.

The Marauders had runners at second and third with one out in the first but could not plate the game's first run.

The Red Raiders responded by posting one run in the second and another in the third to take a 2-0 lead.

The Marauders got on the board in the fourth when Kossyk's infield single plated Ashwell, but MU would come no closer.

Game 2 was a similar story for Millersville as each team tallied three hits, but the Marauders could not take advantage of four Shippensburg errors and left six runners stranded compared to Shippensburg's one.

Courtney Eckman (fr. Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg HS) threw a solid seven innings for the Marauders in defeat, allowing the Red Raiders to reach base just four times.

The Red Raiders posted a run each in the third and fourth innings before MU's seventh-inning rally fell short.

The Marauders will next play on Saturday when they host West Chester for Family Day/Strike Out Breast Cancer Day at Pucillo Field. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
