SOFTBALL TEAM SUFFERS TWO MORE TOUGH DEFEATS
April 18 – The Millersville University softball team suffered its fourth straight one-run defeat before dropping another heartbreaker in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Mansfield on Friday.
The Marauders (17-21, 5-13 PSAC East) tied the second game at 5-5 in the sixth after plating two runs only to see the Mountaineers (12-15, 6-12 PSAC East) respond with six in the bottom half to secure an 11-5 victory.
Millersville led 2-1 after two innings of Game 1, but the Mountaineers put up a two-spot in the third to take the lead for good.
Millersville's Janelle Mrakovich (jr. Middletown, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS) went 4-for-4 in Game 2 and added another hit in Game 1. She scored twice in the doubleheader.
Teammate Linsday Hosier (so. Glen Mills, Pa./Penncrest HS) went 3-for-4 with one run and an RBI in Game 2. She also added a hit in Game 1.
Trailing 1-0 in the first game, Millersville took the lead when Maria Polyak's (so. Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury HS) single to left drove in Casey Coker (fr. Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) and Mrakovich.
But Mansfield re-took the lead in the bottom of the third and would never relinquish it after RBI singles from Nicole Yost and Kristina Poore.
In Game 2, Mansfield jumped ahead by posting four runs in the second inning. Millersville clawed back starting with Polyak's 2-RBI single in the fourth.
Mansfield added another run in the bottom half but Hosier homered in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-3.
Shaina Briel's (jr. Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) single to left center plated the tying runs in the sixth, but Mansfield busted out five hits and took advantage of two Marauder errors to blow the game wide open in the bottom half.
Millersville will host West Chester for a 1 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow (Saturday) at Pucillo Field. The team will celebrate Family Day as well as Strike Out Against Breast Cancer Day.
