WOMEN’S LACROSSE FALLS TO LOCK HAVEN IN FINAL MINUTE

April 19 – The Millersville University women’s lacrosse team held a three-goal halftime lead, but watched as Lock Haven rallied and scored two goals in the final minute of the contest to record a 14-12 victory Saturday afternoon at Beimesderfer Stadium.

Millersville (6-6, 5-6 PSAC) has now lost three games in a row and will have three games left to make a run at the final playoff spot for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament.

Elizabeth Weekley (so. Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown), fourth in the PSAC in goals per game (4.00), led the Marauders with six tallies.  Lauren Ward (sr. Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) and Molly Fisher (sr. Erdenheim, Pa./Springfield) chipped in with two apiece while Amy Longenecker (sr. West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and Kelly Kemper (jr. Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) each scored one for the home team.

Weekley scored three of her game high six goals in the first half as the Marauders built a 7-4 lead by halftime.

Millersville held its biggest lead with just over ten minutes remaining in the first half when Ward found Kemper in front of the net to make the score 6-2.

Lock Haven (11-3, 9-2 PSAC) responded with back-to-back goals, but a score by Weekley with 15 seconds remaining produced the halftime score.

After Fisher’s second goal of the game gave the Marauders an 8-5 lead with just under 25 minutes (24:37) to play, the Bald Eagles rattled off four straight goals over the next 8:19 to grab their first lead of the game, 9-8.

Millersville quickly erased the lead with a goal by Weekley 13 seconds later that knotted the game at 9-9.

Lock Haven kept the pressure on however, scoring the next three goals to grab a 12-9 lead with 12:28 to play.

The Marauders did not go quietly as they eventually tied the game again with less than one minute to play on Weekley’s final goal of the afternoon.

The comeback could not be completed though, as the Marauders gave up two goals in the final 33 seconds and fell to the fifth-ranked team in the country.

Millersville goalie Courtney Haggerty (fr. Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) played outstanding as she made 13 saves on 27 shots.  Kira Nutall made 11 saves on 23 shots for the visitors.

The Lady Marauders will travel to East Stroudsburg on Monday, April 21, to take on the Warriors in a critical PSAC matchup beginning at 4 p.m.
