MARAUDERS AND MOUNTAINEERS COMBINE FOR 55 RUNS IN DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT

April 19 – The Millersville University baseball team split a doubleheader with host Mansfield Saturday afternoon, falling 13-12 in game one before responding for an extra-inning victory in game two by a final of 17-13.

Millersville picked up their 13th win in 15 games and took three of four from Mansfield over the weekend.  Millersville (19-22, 10-6 PSAC East) entered the day tied with West Chester for first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings.

The two teams combined for 55 runs on 70 hits in the two games, including 14 homeruns and 30 extra-base hits.

Millersville scored a single run in the top of the sixth inning of game one to knot the game at 6-6 before Mansfield picked up seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the frame to blow the game open.

Millersville did not go quietly however as they pushed six runs across the plate in the top of the seventh that included a grand slam by left fielder Enrique Arroyo (sr. Bensalem, Pa./Dominican University).

With two on and two out in the seventh, Millersville was unable to collect the final hit they needed to keep the game going as a groundout to the third baseman ended their chances.

Game two saw much of the same offensive explosion as Millersville banged out a season-high 23 hits and delivered four runs in the first extra frame to earn a split of the doubleheader.

Every starter for the Marauders collected at least two hits and scored a run in the game while all but one drove in a run.

Centerfielder Cory Phelan (so. Newark, DE/Charter School of Wilmington) finished the day 6-for-10 with two homeruns, seven runs batted in and three runs scored while first baseman Derek Kline (fr. Cleona, Pa./Shippensburg University) collected six hits in nine at-bats and drove in four runs while scoring two more.

Right fielder/pitcher Brett Rhoads (sr. Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) chipped in with five hits on the day, including his third homerun of the season.  Second baseman Ryan McCormick (fr. West Chester, Pa./West Chester Henderson), right fielder Kent Gerdes (so. Lititz, Pa./Mansfield University) and Arroyo each punched out four hits while catcher Miles Gallagher (so. Lancaster, Pa./University of Pittsburgh) and third baseman Cody Wile (jr. Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) each collected three.

Millersville will host Wilmington University Tuesday, April 22, at 3 p.m. in a non-conference game before playing their final four-game series of the season next weekend when they take on East Stroudsburg.
