MARAUDERS POUND OUT 22 HITS IN COMEBACK VICTORY OVER WILMINGTON
April 22 – The Millersville University baseball team continued to light up the scoreboard as they tallied 13 runs over the final four innings to knock off visiting Wilmington University, 14-9, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.
The Marauders (20-22, 10-6 PSAC East), who need just one victory this weekend to clinch a spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs, delivered their second-straight 20+ hit performance. The Marauders collected a season-high 23 hits in a game two win over Mansfield on Saturday.
Millersville trailed 8-1 after four and one-half innings but scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to cut the lead to 8-5.
After relief pitcher Jesse Shablin (sr. Langhorn, Pa./Bucks CC) shut down the Wilmington offense in the top of the seventh, Millersville scored six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the inning to grab their first lead of the game.
Right fielder Keith Spencer (fr. Hershey, Pa./Hershey) and second baseman Ryan McCormick (fr. West Chester, Pa./West Chester Henderson) delivered back-to-back RBI-doubles to pull the Marauders within one (8-7), and centerfielder Cory Phelan (so. Newark, DE/Charter School of Wilmington) completed the comeback with a two-run homerun to center field that gave Millersville a 9-8 lead. Phelan finished the game 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Third baseman Cody Wile (jr. Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) gave the Marauders breathing room later in the inning when he slapped a two-out single to center field that plated first baseman Derek Kline (fr. Cleona, Pa./Shippensburg University) and shortstop Scott Slembecker (jr. Bel Air, Md./Harford CC). Wile also collected four hits in the game as he finished 4-for-5 with a run scored and five RBI.
Millersville pushed three more runs across in the eighth inning and closer Zach Eckley (fr. Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) gave up just one run over the final two innings to secure his first save of the season.
The win marked the third straight game the Marauders scored 12 or more runs and was the 14th win in the team’s last 16 games.
Wilmington (15-15, 9-1 CACC), who beat the Marauders on a walk-off grandslam back on March 25, finished the game with 17 hits.
Millersville will look to lock up a playoff spot this Friday when they host East Stroudsburg University for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
