LADY MARAUDERS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH ESU
April 22 – The Millersville University women’s softball team ended their eight-game losing streak Tuesday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over East Stroudsburg but later lost to the Warriors 9-1 in the second game of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Starting pitcher Janelle Mrakovich (jr. Middletown, Pa./Biship McDevitt) picked up her team-best ninth win of the season as she spread seven hits over seven innings and gave up just one run in the win. She also led the Marauder offense as she drove in all three Marauder runs.
The Marauders (18-25, 6-16 PSAC East) jumped out in front with a run in the top of the first inning as Mrakovich singled home second baseman Shaina Briel (jr. Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area).
ESU tied the game in the bottom of the third inning with a homerun to center field.
The Marauders, who managed just one hit through the first five innings, punched out three hits and scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good.
Mrakovich delivered a two-out double to right center that scored centerfielder Alexa Ashwell (sr. Westminster, Md./Westminster) and first baseman Erin Hepner (sr. Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) for the go-ahead runs.
Game two, shortened by the mercy rule, saw the Warriors score nine runs on 12 hits in just five innings to pull out the win.
Millersville managed seven hits in the game including two from catcher Trisha Johnson (2-for-3) (jr. Nescopeck, Pa./Central Columbia) but the team could not find the big hit as they left eight runners on base.
The team will wrap up their season this weekend when they take on Columbia Union on Friday for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. The Marauders will then honor their seniors Saturday in their final games against Bloomsburg beginning at 1 p.m.
