WEEKLEY SCORES EIGHT BUT VICTORIOUS MARAUDERS TO MISS PLAYOFFS AFTER ESU BEATS SHIPPENSBURG
April 24 – The Millersville University women's lacrosse team blew out winless Slippery Rock at home on Thursday afternoon but will miss the 2008 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs after East Stroudsburg 's 10-8 victory over Shippensburg.
The Marauders (7-7, 6-7 PSAC) scored the first five goals against The Rock (0-15, 0-13 PSAC) and never looked back in a 25-5 win, which snapped a four-game losing streak.
Elizabeth Weekley (so. Pottstown , Pa. /Pottstown HS) matched her career high by scoring eight goals. She now has 63 goals on the season and needs just five to set a new Millersville single-season record. Cherie Meiklejohn set the current record 19 years ago by scoring 67 goals.
Katrina Segar (fr. West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan HS) added three goals while Amy Longenecker (sr. West Chester, Pa./Henderson HS), Lauren Ward (sr. Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara HS), Kelsey Schmoltze (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland HS) and Morgan Mangiaruga (fr. North Wales, Pa./North Penn HS) each scored twice.
Other MU goal scorers were Kelly Kemper (jr. Bel Air, Md./Bel Air HS), Molly Fisher (sr. Erdenheim, Pa. /Springfield HS), Laura DeLuca (jr. North Wales, Pa./North Penn HS), Rebecca Barker (jr. Coatesville, Pa./Linden Hall), Anna Marmer (sr. Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove HS) and Stephanie Cook (fr. Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown West HS).
In the Shippensburg-East Stroudsburg game, Ship cut the lead to 9-8 with just over six minutes to play, but the Red Raiders added an insurance goal with about one minute left to win by two.
The Marauders end their 2008 season with a Senior Day game against Indiana (Pa.) this Saturday at 1 p.m.
