BASEBALL SWEPT BY ESU; CLINCH TOP SEED IN PSAC EAST

April 26 - A year after posting a last-place finish in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division the Millersville University baseball team clinched first-place as they finished league play with a 12-8 record, one game better than second-place West Chester.

Millersville lost both games of a doubleheader to East Stroudsburg Saturday, falling by scores of 7-3 and 5-3.  The losses did not have an effect on the Marauders’ seeding as West Chester lost both games today as well.

Millersville (22-24, 12-8 PSAC East) earned their first playoff appearance since 2000, a year they also won the division.

The Marauders never led in either game of the doubleheader as East Stroudsburg collected 18 hits in the two games combined.

ESU broke a game-one, scoreless tie in the third inning as they put up seven runs on five hits off of Millersville starting pitcher Forrest Mengle (so. Mechanicsburg, Pa./Shippensburg University).

Millersville began a comeback in the sixth inning as they scored three runs on three hits highlighted by catcher Miles Gallagher’s (so. Lancaster, Pa./University of Pittsburgh) two-run blast that cut the Warrior lead to four (7-3).

East Stroudsburg starter Dave Boyer shut the door however, as he pitched a complete-game for the win.

Game two saw Millersville tie the score at 3-3 in the fourth inning on back-to-back RBI-singles by second baseman Ryan McCormick (fr. West Chester, Pa./West Chester Henderson) and centerfielder Cory Phelan (so. Newark, DE/Charter School of Wilmington).

The Warriors then responded with a pair of runs in the sixth inning that sealed the win.

Millersville will begin pursuit of the PSAC Championship Wednesday, April 30, with their time and opponent yet to be determined.  The entire championship will be played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in Lancaster, Pa.

Schedule Note: Tomorrow’s doubleheader against California (Pa.) has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.
