GOLF TEAM TIED FOR 4TH AFTER DAY 1 OF NCAA EAST REGIONAL
May 5 – The Millersville University men's golf team shot an opening day 314 to finish in a three-way tie for fourth place at the NCAA East Regional, which still has two days of action remaining at the Back Creek Country Club in Middletown, Del.
Darryn DeShong (jr. Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) posted Millersville's top score, a 75 (+4) that put him in a four-way tie for seventh place.
Corey Gast (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg HS) recorded a 79 (+8) to finish the day tied for 21 st .
Nick Magenta (so. Philadelphia, Pa. /Roman Catholic HS) and Trent Coldren (jr. Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS) are right behind Gast after recording a first-round score of 80 (+9).
Luke Serbun (jr. Abington, Pa./Abington HS) shot a first-day 85 (+14), which was not included in the final team score.
The Marauders will need to finish first in the eight-team field in order to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003.
The Marauders, the fifth seed in this year's East Regional, have won two tournaments this season, beginning with the Wheeling Jesuit Invitational (14 teams) in September. The Marauders then won the Goldey-Beacom Invitational (13 teams) this spring. Millersville finished third at last year's NCAA East Regional Tournament.
If MU does not win, an individual Marauder could still qualify for the NCAA tourney by posting the lowest score out of any golfer who does not play on the winning team. Former Millersville golfer Chad Schulze took this road to the National Tournament in 1999-00 by winning the East Regional.
