SHEHAN NAMED PSAC EAST BASEBALL COACH OF THE YEAR; KLINE TAKES HOME ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

May 8 – Millersville University head baseball coach Jon Shehan was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Coach of the Year while freshman first baseman Derek Kline was honored as the division's Rookie of the Year as voted on by the PSAC head coaches on Tuesday. Also honored on Tuesday were utility player Brett Rhoads, third baseman Cody Wile and centerfielder Corey Phelan.

Coach Shehan, in his first year at the Marauder helm, guided the team to their first Eastern Division title since 2000 and turned around a squad that won just nine total games a season ago. The 15-win improvement from the '07 (9-37) to '08 (24-26) seasons is the third-best single-season turnaround in school history.

Coach Shehan became the first head coach in Millersville baseball history to clinch the division championship in his first season. The Marauders finished the season with a 24-26 record after beginning the season winning just six of their first 26 games. The 24 total wins are tied for the sixth-most in a single season at Millersville.

Senior utility player Brett Rhoads and junior third baseman Cody Wile became the first Marauders to be named to the All-PSAC East First Team since current head coach Jon Shehan was named to the team in 2004.

Rhoads was named to an All-PSAC team for the first time in his career and did it by contributing from both sides of the ball. The right-hander led the Marauder pitching staff with nine starts and 63 total innings. His three complete games were also best on the team while his season highlights included a complete-game, division-clinching shutout against East Stroudsburg back on April 21 when he allowed just two hits. Rhoads also started the first game of the conference playoffs for the Marauders, tossing eight and two-thirds innings while allowing just three runs on six hits and registering five strikeouts.

Not only did Rhoads, whose career achievements at Millersville include throwing a no-hitter against Mansfield in 2007, make nine starts on the mound but he also started in 49 of the Marauders 50 games this season. Rhoads finished third on the team in hits (50), fourth in RBI (31) and third in at-bats (178).

Wile was also selected to an All-PSAC team for the first time in his career and did it by leading the Marauder offense with a .366 average and finishing second on the team in RBI with 38. Wile enjoyed a solid playoff performance, finishing the four games with a .375 average (6-for-16) while scoring three runs and driving in eight more.

Freshman Derek Kline, a Second Team All-PSAC selection at first base and Rookie of the Year recipient, helped pace the Marauder offense with his .364 batting average and led the team in several offensive categories including hits (67), runs (51), doubles (15), triples (2), home runs (6), RBI (41)and total bases (104). Kline started in all 50 games for Millersville this season and his offensive statistics left him tied for fifth in the conference in runs scored, doubles and total bases.

Joining Kline on the second team was sophomore centerfielder Corey Phelan. Phelan finished third on the team in batting average (.333) while starting in 49 games this season. Phelan's 64 hits, 12 doubles, five homeruns, 38 RBI and 95 total bases were second on the team only to the numbers of Kline. The speedy centerfielder stole 15 bases in 17 attempts this season while leading the team at-bats with 192.
