MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S SOCCER GETS FIRST WIN OF SEASON; DEFEATS SHIPPENSBURG, 2-1
September 29, 2007, Millersville, Pa. -- The Millersville University women’s soccer team earned its first win of the year by defeating Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East opponent Shippensburg, 2-1, at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium on Saturday.
Back Morgan Umble (fr. Gap/Lancaster Mennonite) and midfielder Stephanie Mellott (fr. New Cumberland/Cedar Cliff) picked up the goals for Millersville (1-7-2, 1-5-2 PSAC).
The lone Shippensburg goal (6-3-0, 4-3-0 PSAC) came from Alison Dowdrick.
Karrine Riggins (sr. Millersville/Penn Manor) stopped four shots to preserve the win for Millersville. Shippensburg’s Beth Long made seven saves in a losing effort.
The game was tied at one at the half. Mellott scored the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute. She finished a crossing pass from midfielder Olivia Taylor (fr. Dillsburg/Northern) by shooting it into the upper left corner.
Shippensburg held a 1-0 lead on Dowdrick’s goal in the 39th minute. Amanda Greenawalt assisted on the play.
The Marauders tied the score with a 43rd minute goal by Umble. The goal came on a corner kick that was put in play by midfielder Alison Silva (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown Area).
Millersville is back on the field on Monday, October 1 at Edinboro in a PSAC crossover game at 4 p.m.
