ZWAAN LEADS WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL TO A 42-14 WIN OVER MILLERSVILLE
October 6, 2007, Millersville, Pa. – Quarterback Bill Zwaan threw for 343 yards and four touchdowns to lead the West Chester University football team to a 42-14 victory over host Millersville University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East game on Saturday night at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
West Chester, ranked 17th in the last American Football Coaches Association poll, is now 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC. Millersville has an overall record of 2-4 and a 1-1 conference mark.
Receiver Mike Washington caught five passes for 117 yards and one touchdown. Receiver Steve Miller also had five receptions for 67 yards and a score. Tight end Ryan Paulson had two touchdown grabs. On the ground, back Osagie Osunde ran the ball 13 times for 89 yards. Fullback Brandon Hargrose and running back Dean Millard both had rushing touchdowns.
Defensively, linebackers Lateef Ferguson and Sam Scott recorded 12 and 11 tackles, respectively. Scott had two-and-a-half tackles for a loss and a sack.
Quarterback Jamal Smith (fr. Camp Hill/Trinity) led the Millersville offense with 146 yards passing, 51 yards rushing and two touchdowns (one passing, one rushing). Running back Brad Lantz (so. Towanda/Towanda) had a team-high 52 yards on the ground on 20 carries. Wide out Randall Eggleton (sr. Philadelphia/John Bartram) caught six balls for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Safety Marcus Banks (sr. Philadelphia/George Washington) led the team with 12 tackles, including one for a loss. He also forced a fumble and recovered a fumble and broke up one pass. Defensive back Dan McClellan (fr. Langhorne/Neshaminy) intercepted a pass.
Zwaan gave West Chester a 7-0 lead just 54 seconds into the game with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Washington. Running back Kevin Garland set up the drive with a 41-yard kick return to midfield. After a Millersville punt, West Chester took a 14-0 lead on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Zwaan to Paulson with 2:58 left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Golden Rams went up 21-0 on a three-yard scamper by Millard. The defense set-up the score by forcing and recovering a fumble at the Marauder three. The West Chester lead grew to 28-0 with 10:23 left in the first half. Zwaan connected with Paulson for a seven-yard scoring strike. Millersville got on the board when Smith capped off a 12-play 66-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run with 5:24 left in the quarter. The Marauders pulled within 28-14 on a Smith 37-yard connection to Eggleton with 1:42 left on the clock. McClellan intercepted a pass at the Golden Ram 47 to give the offense a short field. Miller ended the first half scoring with a 13-yard reception with 1:05 to go and put West Chester ahead, 35-14. A 53-yard pass from Zwaan to Washington helped lead to the touchdown.
The game's final score came in the fourth quarter. Hargrose found the end zone with a two-yard run to give the Golden Rams a 42-14 advantage.
Millersville will host Shippensburg on Saturday, October 13 in a PSAC cross-over game for Homecoming. The game will air on ESPN Radio 1600-AM and redzonemedia.com.
