Getting Started with Teaching with Technology at Millersville

The First Step
Check with Human Resources to make sure you have all of your information correctly completed and submitted and that you have been added to the student information system (AKA: BANNER).

The Second Step
Confirm with your department and/or with the Registrar's office that you are the instructor of record for the course you are teaching. If you are not the instructor of record according to the Registrar you will not be able to use some of the online tools for teaching.

So what Tools/Resources are available to me?

Course Management Systems
On campus, we have two course management systems that you can use to enhance your face-to-face courses or use to offer distance education courses. The two systems are Blackboard and eCollege.

In general, Blackboard is more intuitive and so is easier to use if you are just starting. eCollege has slightly more features and complexity. With either system, you can post your syllabi, handouts, host discussions (synchronous or asynchronous), and even include tests. Workshops are offered on campus periodically and are announced via email.

To request a course in either Blackboard or eCollege, you must first attain your Millersville identification number (a.k.a. your “M” number) from Human Resources. You then must verify with the Registrar's office that you have been officially assigned to your courses in Banner, the Student Information System.

To request a Blackboard course

  1. go to: http://muweb.millersville.edu/~wms/bb/
  2. click on “Request a new Bb course”

Opportunities for learning

At MU we have a number of opportunities for learning about technology used in teaching. Through the Help Desk and Web and Multimedia Services we offer workshops and one-to-one training.

Realizing that we cannot hold these training sessions when everyone is available, Information Technology augments the classroom style instruction with a library of video training material, as well as training books and manuals. The videos, like the classroom instruction, are available in introductory, intermediate and advanced versions. A list of available videos and training books can be found on the Help Desk web page – www.millersville.edu/~help In addition, online step-by-step documentation may be found at http://www.millersville.edu/services/infotech/ittrain/

Learning Opportunities for Students
Since the use of technology is unique to each instructor, MU does not offer formal training on teaching and learning technology to students. The responsibility of teaching students about technology used in instruction primarily rests with the faculty member. To provide assistance to the faculty member, we have developed a website that has step-by-step documents that will walk students (or anyone) through the use of common technology used in instruction. The online step-by-step documentation may be found at http://www.millersville.edu/services/infotech/ittrain/
