Advisement

Math Requirement:

Remember that you need to take a Math placement exam and take the course that is recommended as a result of your performance on it.  That can be confusing for transfer students, so I asked how best to handle it.   Robert T. Smith, Chair of the Department of Mathematics responded as follows regarding the math requirement and transfer students:

We do MATH placement testing at the transfer orientation each semester, unless a student is transferring in a college MATH class (such as MATH 101), in which case, we can simply place them into the next course (which depends very much on their major). Unfortunately, many transfer students skip the orientation and therefore skip the placement testing. We catch them as quickly as we can. However, students sometimes go along for some time before they realize that they need a MATH class. The only way I see to improve this is better advising. Also, students need to print off their DARS reports regularly and scrutinize them carefully. For students who transfer in MATH 101, it’s true that this will not count in Gen Ed. However, it does count as one of the two college-level MATH courses required for certification. I hope this helps.
