Service-Learning Information and Resources for Faculty

We are here to support you, the faculty member, in designing and implementing service-learning courses and pedagogies.  Our staff is knowledgeable in service-learning practices and resources, and we maintain a continually expanding list of service sites in the community.

Working with the office of Community and Academic Partnerships offers faculty members assistance with logistics, opportunities for recognition, and a community of educators dedicated to civic engagement.

We also offer periodic professional development opportunities on campus for faculty with an interest in service-learning.

To encourage the development of service-learning, we offer the following here:

Consultations and Referrals
  Meet with us to discuss implementing service-learning in your curriculum, including the development of community service placements appropriate to the academic goals and objectives of your course.
 
Resource Library
  We maintain a library of books, journals, workbooks, texts, and other materials on all aspects of service-learning.
 
Syllabus Development & Sample Syllabi
  Resources to assist you in developing a syllabus that integrates service-learning, as well as samples of syllabi from service-learning courses.
 
Reflection
  Structured reflection is an integral component of service-learning. These resources discuss techniques, strategies and research on this important topic.
 
Community-Based Research
  Information on CBR, a model of service-learning that involves students and faculty working with a community organization or a community itself on a research project serving the community’s needs.
 
Grant Information
  A continually-updated listing of the latest service-learning-related grant opportunities that we have found.
 
Professional Development Opportunities
 
 
Awards and Recognition for Faculty
  Faculty members are invited to apply for the University’s XXXXXX Award, presented each Spring.  Additional awards and recognitions are also reviewed.
 
Awards and Recognition for Students
  Nominate your students who are participating in outstanding service-learning projects, particularly community-based research, for these annual awards.
 
Tenure and Promotion
  Service-learning supports excellence in the classroom, in scholarship, and in the community.  Learn more about how service-learning pedagogies enhance opportunities for tenure and promotion.
 
Evaluation and Assessment
  How can we measure the benefits of service-learning?  What tools can we use to assess its impact?  Find information on existing research, instruments for measuring your own programs, and reviews of effective assessment practices.
