ACTOR RICHARD DREYFUSS TO SPEAK AT MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY
MILLERSVILLE, Pa., April 10, 2008—The Center for Civic and Community Engagement and Research Project (CCERP) at Millersville University is hosting its first Civic Leadership Awards Event with actor and comedian Richard Dreyfuss as the keynote speaker. Ten awards will be given for distinguished civic leadership at the local, regional, national and international levels. The evening will convene at 5:30 p.m. in the Lehr Hall at Gordinier Conference Center with a reception and awards banquet.
Dreyfuss’s presentation titled “Teaching Students How to Think, Not What to Think: The Basic Tools of Reason, Logic, Dissent, Civility and Debate” will be held in Lyte Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.
“Dreyfuss has had a career with which CCERP felt most people were familiar.” said Lori J. Leaman, Events Coordinator of CCERP. “His list of movie fame and notoriety is extensive. However, his passion for civic engagement is also heralded albeit less widely known. This time, he is a citizen, exhorting us to help him breathe life into a declining subject…civics. For the past few years he has been on a mission to save democracy from what he calls “the forces of evil”—apathy, ignorance and a lack of civility—and he’s trying to do something about it.”
Dreyfuss is one of the leading actors of American cinema. Three of his films were recently included in the American Film Institute's list of the greatest 100 films. One of his notable roles was as the teacher in “Mr. Holland's Opus,” for which he received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for best actor. He also won the Academy Award for best actor in “The Goodbye Girl.” Also known as a strong political and social activist, he has campaigned for candidates and causes, given testimony advocating for national and community service before congressional and other governmental committees. He also works with groups promoting solutions to the Arab/Israeli conflict.
