May 2008 Graduation Honors
There are three categories of undergraduate graduation honors:
- Department Honors
student must complete research and a thesis written under supervision of a faculty member (see the Undergraduate Catalog, Special Academic Opportunities section)
- Honors College
student must complete designated honors courses, submit and successfully defend a thesis, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.35 (see the Undergraduate Catalog, Special Academic Opportunities section)
- University Honors (Latin Honors)
is based on minimum GPA and credits earned at Millersville (see below for specific criteria)
Calculation of University Latin Honors for degree candidates:
A student must have a minimum cumulative MU GPA of 3.35 to be considered for graduation honors eligibility (see below for detailed criteria). Since final grades are posted to the academic record after commencement has taken place, “in progress” courses cannot be included in calculating an honors GPA. Therefore, a student’s current MU GPA, excluding in-progress work, will be used to determine the honors designation for a degree candidate to wear Honors cords at commencement, and to print the candidate’s honors designation in the program for the commencement ceremony. After final grades are posted, academic honors will be recalculated, and any change in the honors designation will be updated on the graduate’s transcript and diploma.
Changes in the Policy for Graduation with Latin Honors:
Recently the University approved changes in the criteria for graduation with Latin Honors (baccalaureate degrees) or With Honors (associate degrees). The new policy is published in the 2007-2008 Undergraduate Catalog and posted on the Registrar’s Office web site. The new criteria will determine Latin Honors eligibility for all undergraduate students who complete their degree requirements, beginning in December 2009 and beyond, regardless of their original admission date.
In the interim prior to full implementation of the new policy, a transitional plan has been developed to address graduation honors eligibility for students completing degree requirements before December 2009. This implementation plan is based on the previous criteria for graduation honors; the only change concerns whether transfer credits are included in calculating the Honors GPA. The following section describes the specific criteria that will apply to all students who graduate during the transitional period between December 2007 and Summer Session 3 2009.
Latin Honors Criteria for Students Graduating December 2007 through Summer 2009
Students who achieve an honors GPA at the levels below are recognized as graduated with the appropriate Latin honors:
