Glossary
Green Roof - Vegetated roof covers, with growing media and plants taking the place of bare membrane, gravel ballast, shingles or tiles.
Extensive green roofs - Lightweight veneer systems of thin layers of drought tolerant self-seeding vegetated roof covers using colorful sedums, grasses, mosses and meadow flowers requiring little or no irrigation, fertilization or maintenance after establishment.
Intensive green roofs - Elaborately designed roof landscapes, such as roof gardens and above/underground parking garage roofs, which are intended for human interaction and will need to be engineered to conform to the load requirements.
Butyl Lining - A typical form a lining used on green roofs to protect from water damage.
Root Barrier - A layer typically made of concrete used to prevent roots from penetrating the waterproofing membrane.
Growth Media - A form a soil made of organic and inorganic parts used in green roofs.
Urban Heat Island - A metropolitan area which is significantly warmer than its surroundings.
LEEDS - program is a program that certifies a high standard of green building. LEEDS concentrates its measurements on localizing the materials, energy efficiency, water efficiency, and other areas.
