Charlotte Higler joined
ECONOMICSPennsylvania as a field consultant in 1998.
Although her major responsibility is with Millersville University Center
for Economic Education, she is also associated with the Villanova Center for
Economic Education and with the Safeguard Scientifics Center for Economic
Education at Temple University. Before
joining ECONOMICSPennsylvania , Charlotte taught economics and psychology and
served as Director of Student Activities at Strath Haven High School in
Wallingford, Pennsylvania for more than 30 years.
Charlotte has designed and implemented curriculum in United States
Government for grades 11 and 12, Comparative and Economic Systems for grade 12,
and Psychology for grades 11 and 12. In
addition, she developed a special interdisciplinary curriculum utilizing
Philadelphia’s historic Reading Terminal Market and entitled, The Reading
Terminal Market Experience. The
Reading Terminal Market Experience was presented at the Philadelphia
Convention Center in 1997 before a group of regional teachers at the invitation
of Temple University’s Safeguard Scientifics Center for Economic Education.
In association with Mike Gumpper a website, TechConnect, was
created that explored the topic of entrepreneurship for students in grades 7 to
12.
From 1984 to 1997, Charlotte developed Leadership Seminar programs held
annually at Swarthmore College for Strath Haven students.
She has also published articles in Leadership Magazine for the
National Association of Secondary School Principals – National Association of
Student Activities Advisors.
Charlotte has been the recipient of several awards including the
Wallingford-Swarthmore All-District Service Award in 1989, Strath Haven High
School Student Council Appreciation Award in 1989, Wallingford-Swarthmore
Education Association’s Educator of the Year Award in 1997, the Pennsylvania
Partnership for Economic Education Excellent in Teaching Award in 1997, and the
National Association of Economic Educators and National Council for Economic
Education “Rookie of the Year” award in 1999.
Charlotte
received her BS from West Chester University in 1964 and her MS from West
Chester University in 1984. She has
also completed advanced graduate work at Widener University, LaSalle College,
Penn State University, and received a National Science Foundation Grant in
Psychology at Beaver College.
