FRENCH 512 (Undergrad. 416) PHONETICS (3 credits) Scientific approach to correct formation of French sounds in isolation and in combination. Remedial drill.  Language laboratory experience.  Required for degree.Offered: M-F 1-2:30pm in McComsey Room 205; Instructor: Prof. Didier Karolinski

FRENCH 542 (Undergrad. 447) HISTORY OF FRANCE FROM 1789 TO THE PRESENT (3 credits) Through the use of written and video materials, this course will give an overview of post-Napoleonic French civilization through the descriptive and critical study of the interrelation and interaction of history, philosophy, literature, and the fine arts. The course will consist of five modules: 1) 1815-1848: Restoration, Reaction, and the failure of Compromise 2) 1848-1870: Revolution and the rise of the Second Empire 3) 1871-1940: The Triumph and Tragedy of the Third Republic 4) 1940-1970: From Humiliation to Modernization: The de Gaulle era 5) 1970-present: The Consolidation of the 5th Republic and the emergence of France as a multicultural European Union member. Undergraduate students who have 24 or more undergraduate language credits and are able to observe the no-English rule are also permitted to participate. For these students a number of courses such as Conversation, Composition, Functional Grammar Review, Aspects of Contemporary Germany, and sometimes Phonetics are offered on a regular basis. Undergraduate students must seek permission of French Graduate School Director prior to registration.
