FRENCH 584 (Undergrad. 484*) SEMINAR IN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY LITERATURE (3 credits) The course will introduce students to eighteenth century French literature through a close reading of five novels and their film adaptations. Specific attention will be given to the social, historical and literary contexts in which the works were written and conceived as well as the influence of the authors on modern French society.

FRENCH 561 (Undergrad. 461*)   SURVEY OF FRENCH ART (3 credits)  Treats in broad fashion France’s contribution to art and music.  Considerable use is made of films, slides and recordings.

FRENCH 523 (Undergrad. 443*)   STYLISTICS AND COMPOSITION
(3 credits)  Designed to give students a feeling for French style in writing, a sense of shade in meaning, and  a mastery of certain difficulties of grammar and syntax.  Writing compositions and participation in the student newspaper.  Any two of 523, 524, and 525 required for the degree.

Undergraduate students who have 24 or more undergraduate language credits and are able to observe the no-English rule are also permitted to participate. For these students a number of courses such as Conversation, Composition, Functional Grammar Review, Aspects of Contemporary Germany, and sometimes Phonetics are offered on a regular basis. Undergraduate students must seek permission of French Graduate School Institute Director prior to registration.
