Summer Graduate Institutes
Graduate programs in French, German and Spanish are total immersion, residential summer schools offering the MA and the MED. All students are expected to observe a "no-English" rule both in and out of the classroom. The language schools welcome degree candidates, teachers working toward certification, persons planning to travel abroad, and those desiring "refresher courses" for credit or by audit. Participants are, for the most part, high school teachers working towards the Master's Degree, trying to get permanent certification or seeking certification in a second, sometimes third language.
The program is of five weeks duration, meeting five days per week on-campus at Millersville University. Students are housed in a language dormitory in SHENK'S HALL with separate floors assigned to the various languages. Shenks Hall is owned and operated by Student Lodging, Inc. and is a recently completed upscale residence. Each suite consist of: common living room, climate control, private bedrooms, university network-phone/data/cable, bedding/towels, and two full baths. Shenks Hall provides key card access, ample parking, laundry facilities, monitored security throughout and TV/Lounge areas with wireless access.
Participants take their meals at specially assigned tables for their particular language, with a faculty member assigned to each table to facilitate conversation. The normal load for students is six credits, and the average student can earn the Master's Degree in 3-5 summers. Transfer credits from accredited institutions are accepted, but 24 credits must be earned in residence. Although a number of students commute, the students are encouraged to live on campus.
Registration for the foreign language summer institutes begins in April, 2009 via the MAX registration system online. Please note that an institute fee will be assessed upon registration for any graduate course. That institute fee will not be refunded after June 2, 2009.
