About Northern Ireland

Ireland is one of the world’s most charming countries. Its friendly people, with strong cultural ties to Pennsylvania, are disarmingly frank and open. Stunning scenery like Slieve League (Europe’s highest sea cliffs), the Glens of Antrim, and the Giant’s Causeway set the background for important cultural contributions such as Newgrange megalithic site (5000 years old), Derry’s historic city walls and Corrymeela Peace Center. Prosperity and peace are transforming Ireland into a dynamic economy with ancient roots.

Creating a Culture of Peace: Lessons from Northern Ireland will be associated with St. Mary’s University College, the University of Ulster, Corrymeela Peace Center and Oideas Gael Irish Language College.

The course will be visiting Belfast city and several community development centers, Stormont Castle, the Glens of Antrim and the scenic Antrim coast, Corrymeela Peace Center in Ballycastle, Derry city and its ancient walls, and a traditional Irish speaking community in west Donegal.

Program Offerings

All courses will be taught in English. The primary instructor will be Dr. Dominic Scott a professor at Millersville University.

Peace and Education in Northern Ireland

Students should work with their academic advisor to ensure that these three credits are appropriately utilized for the student's major/minor requirements or to fulfill General Education requirements.

Cost

Millersville students will pay approximately $1,995.00 to participate in this course:

This cost includes:

• Airfare
• Accommodations
• Travel in Ireland
• Admissions and stipends for speakers
• Some Meals

This cost does not include:

• Millersville tuition and fees
• ISIC Cards
• Passport (if necessary)
• Some Meals
• Personal expenses (souvenirs and other daily expenses)

In the past, students have spent approximately $500.00 for entertainment, souvenirs, incidentals, and meals.

A payment schedule is available.

Financial Assistance

Since this program offers 3 academic credits, students should contact the Financial Aid Office to discuss their specific financial aid package.

Dates

Students will study in Ireland for 11 days and 9 nights, June 13 – June 23, 2010.

Accommodation

Students will be housed in hostels with Motel 6 standards or higher. These are modern hostels, purpose built peace and cultural conference centers, and B & Bs.

Eligibility

Students must register for one of the above mentioned MU courses (either undergraduate or graduate credits as appropriate).

Transfer of Credit

The course will be the equivalent of 3 MU credits for the eleven day program.
