About Strathclyde

Located on the banks of the River Clyde, Glasgow is Scotland's largest city, with a population around 740,000. The city had its beginnings in a monk's cell, when St. Mungo founded a religious community in the sixth century. The cathedral of St. Mungo, still in existence, was built on the same site.

The University of Strathclyde is Scotland's third largest university, with approximately 14,000 students, whose ages range from 17-70, and represent over 90 countries. It was founded in 1796 as Anderson's Institution by John Anderson who, in his will, left instructions that this institution be established "for the Good of Mankind and the Improvement of Science - a place of useful learning." Indeed, Strathclyde has a wealth of opportunities for all students. The University is the top research university in the West of Scotland and is in the top ranks in the U.K.

Cost

Students participating in the Strathclyde exchange program  pay  MU tuition and the Millersville general and tech fees directly to Millersville.  There is an additional non-refundable, non-transferable $400.00 MU program participation fee paid directly to Millersville with the $40 application fee, due at time of application. Room and board is arranged by Strathclyde and paid directly to them.

These charges do not include passport and visa fees, airfare, books and supplies, possible medical vaccinations or incidental expenses such as laundry, personal travel or entertainment.

Frequently student demand outstrips the exchange slots available during a given semester.  In this instance, students who do not receive an exchange slot but still desire to take part in the Strathclyde program have the option to pay Strathclyde-direct tuition.

Below are the estimated cost worksheets for the spring 2010 semester at Strathclyde. The first cost worksheet estimates costs based on the standard exchange costs and the second estimates the costs of a Strathclyde direct payment (only used when the number of slots available is exceeded by student demand.)

Within the city of Glasgow, there are buses and subways. There is a high-speed Intercity rail service to London from Glasgow Central Station (5 hours).

Financial Assistance

Students should investigate loans which may be available, such as application for Federal Student Aid. Scholarships have individual regulations, and students should contact the Financial Aid Office to determine if their scholarships are transferable. Students can also look into grants such as the Rotary Scholarships which cover all expenses, including room, board, tuition, and airfare. The Rotary Scholarship form must be completed one and a half years in advance and is available from any Rotary Club. Another option is to research online or stop by our office for additional opportunities. Please see Financial Considerations for more information.

Dates

The first semester runs from the end of September to the end of January. Special arrangements can be made for US students needing to return early for the spring semester. The second semester is from the end of January to the end of May. There is a two-week Christmas break and a two-week Easter vacation.

Accommodation

There are a variety of housing options. Students may live in University residence halls or flats. Students may also make independent room or apartment rental arrangements within the city of Glasgow with the assistance of the University of Strathclyde and Millersville University.

Eligibility

Most students who study abroad are traditionally juniors. However, Millersville students can and do study abroad anytime after they have completed 24 credits. A limited number of participants are accepted for the exchange each year, and the selection may be competitive. Students should plan to complete the application the semester before wishing to go abroad. A minimum of a 3.0 GPA (Strathclyde requirement) and two letters of recommendation from MU professors are also required. The Director of Global Education & Partnerships will then interview students and participant selection will be made after the interviews are completed.

Transfer of Credit

Students should work with their advisors to select courses which will fit into their major(s), minor(s), and General Education requirements, if appropriate.

A Request for Study Abroad Resident Credits form, available in the Office of Global Education & Partnerships, must be completed before the student leaves. After the study abroad program is completed and a transcript is sent to Millersville University, the Registrar's Office determines the final transfer of credit. All courses taken at University of Strathclyde will come back to Millersville as transfer credit. Please consult the Undergraduate Catalog ("Transfer Credit") for the transfer policy.
