Faculty and Administrative Units of the University

Departments

The selection and duties of department chairpersons are covered in the CBA, which also covers the appointment of faculty members to departments.
  1. Membership
    1. A department is a body of faculty commonly involved in the scholarly activities of one or more related academic disciplines and recognized as a department in accordance with the current organizational plan.
    2. A voting member of a department is a member of the faculty who holds membership in the department having been assigned to the department by the provost and vice president for academic affairs insofar as such assignment does not conflict with the CBA ( See Section I.A.2. and the CBA for further description and restriction of voting rights.)
  2. Functions:

  3. A department may make decisions or recommendations on all matters affecting it. It is assumed, for example, that no matter directly concerned with a department will be determined by the administration until the department has been given a reasonable opp ortunity to make a recommendation.
  4. Meetings
    1. Regular meetings of a department shall be held as determined by the department and the department chairperson.
    2. Special meetings may be called by one-half of a department's members, the chairperson, the dean of the school, or by the provost and vice president for academic affairs.
    3. A quorum consists of a majority of the regular full-time members of the department.
  5. The following departments exist in the University and are responsible to the administrative officer listed in parentheses.
    1. School of Education

    2. Educational Foundations, Elementary and Early Childhood Education, Industry and Technology, Psychology, Special Education, Wellness and Sport Sciences. (Dean, School of Education).
    3. School of Humanities and Social Sciences
      1. Humanities Academic Unit--Art, English, Foreign Languages, Music, Philosophy, and Communication and Theatre.
      2. Social Sciences Academic Unit--Economics, Business Administration, Geography, Government and Political Affairs, History, Social Work, and Sociology/Anthropology.
      (Both academic units are responsible to the Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences.)
    4. School of Science and Mathematics: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Nursing, and Physics (Dean, School of Science and Mathematics).
    5. The following departments do not offer courses for credit and report to the administrative officer indicated in parentheses:
      1. Counseling and Human Development (Vice President for Student Affairs)
      2. Department of Academic and Student Development (Associate Provost for Academic Services & Retention)
      3. Library Department (Director of Library Services)
    6. Departments may be created, consolidated or dissolved by the University administration in accordance with the CBA. Before any action is taken to create, consolidate or dissolve an academic department, the matter will be presented for discussion at local meet-and-discuss.
