Faculty Participation in University Governance

Faculty-Student Athletic Committee
  1. Membership
    1. Two members are elected by and from the coaching staffs for overlapping terms of two years; one to be elected by the women coaches and one to be elected by the men coaches.
    2. Three faculty members who do not have assigned responsibilities in the athletic program are elected by the Faculty Senate for overlapping terms of three years.
    3. Two non-coaching members of the administrative staff, appointed by the president of the University for overlapping terms of two years.
    4. Three students are elected by the Student Senate for overlapping terms of two years.
    5. The director of men's athletics and the director of women's athletics serve as ex officio non-voting members of the committee.
    6. The faculty representative to the NCAA (non-voting member).
    7. The chairperson is a faculty senator, who does not have assigned responsibilities in the athletic program elected by Faculty Senate at the first Senate meeting of the fall semester for a three-year term, provided he/she retains Senate membership. This person is in addition to the three faculty members who do not have assigned responsibilities in the athletic program elected by Faculty Senate.
    8. The terms of the chair and members begin in September and end in August of the appropriate year.
  2. Functions
    1. To review and formulate policy regarding intercollegiate athletics consistent with the educational philosophy of the University.
    2. To review policy and to recommend the adoption of new policies when warranted.
    3. New policies and policy changes recommended by the committee are reported regularly by the chairperson and are subject to review by the Faculty Senate and the Student Senate.
    4. To review and insure compliance with the policies of the PSAC, ECAC, and NCAA.
    5. To review budgets for all intercollegiate sports in preparation for submission to the Allocations Committee of the Student Senate.
    6. To formulate policies regarding expenditures of allocated funds based upon the recommendation of the athletic director(s).
    7. To establish policy on scheduling of intercollegiate athletic events based upon the recommendation of the athletic director(s).
    8. To approve the policies for the distribution of all athletic awards based upon the recommendation of the athletic director(s).
